How to Get Your Business Showing Up in AI Search
More people are asking an assistant instead of scrolling a results page. Those answers name two or three businesses. Here is what decides whether you are one of them.

What changed, exactly
A traditional search gives you ten links and lets you decide. An AI answer gives you a recommendation and often names two or three companies.
That is a completely different competitive situation. In the old model, position eight still got some clicks. In this one there is no position eight. You are either named or you are not in the conversation, and the person asking never learns you existed.
It is early enough that most local businesses have done nothing about this, which is exactly why it is worth doing something now. Start by seeing what a stranger currently finds.
How AI decides who to mention
These systems are not ranking pages the way a search engine does. They are assembling an answer from what they have absorbed and what they can retrieve, which means the signals are different.
Being described consistently in many places. If twelve different sources describe you the same way, that description becomes the confident answer. If your own site says one thing and three directories say something else, the model has no clear read and reaches for a competitor it is surer about.
Being specific. Vague positioning is fatal here. A model asked for a branding agency for dental practices in San Diego needs somebody to have said those words together. Generic self description gives it nothing to match.
Third party mentions. What other people say about you carries more weight than what you say. Local press, podcasts, roundups, directories, forum threads. This is the part most businesses have no plan for.
Structured data. Machine readable markup on your site that states plainly what you are, where you are, what you offer and how to reach you. It is not glamorous and it removes ambiguity.
Substance and freshness. Thin, stale sites get skipped.
How to become part of the answer
Six things, roughly in order of return.
Write one sentence describing your business specifically, then use it everywhere. Website, Google profile, LinkedIn, directories, your bio on other people's sites. Identical wording. This single move does more than the rest combined and costs nothing.
Publish answers to the questions people actually ask. Not keyword pages. Real questions in real language, answered properly. Models are retrieving answers, so give them something answer shaped.
Add structured data to your site. Organisation, location, services, hours, contact. If you have a developer this is an afternoon.
Get mentioned by other people. Local press, industry roundups, podcast appearances, partner sites. Slow, unglamorous, and the hardest signal for a competitor to copy.
Keep your reviews current and reply to them. Review text is a rich source of the plain language description these systems lean on.
Consider an llms.txt file. A plain text file describing your business for AI crawlers. Support is still emerging, it takes twenty minutes, and being early costs nothing.
How to check where you stand
Open an AI assistant and ask the questions your customers would ask. Best commercial roofer in San Diego. Which agency should a dental practice hire for branding. Who does marketing for nonprofits in San Diego.
Note who gets named. Then ask directly about your own business and see whether what comes back is accurate, vague or wrong. Wrong is common and it is worth knowing about, because it is being repeated to people right now.
Do that again in ninety days. The change between the two is the only measurement that matters here, and no tool reports it yet.
This is a first mover moment
I do not usually say things like that, because most first mover claims in marketing are a way to sell urgency.
This one is real for a narrow reason. The work that makes you visible to AI is the same work that makes you clearer to humans, so there is no downside if the prediction is wrong. You end up with consistent messaging, better content, accurate listings and more reviews, which was worth doing anyway.
It is a bet where losing still leaves you better off, and most competitors in most local markets have not started. That combination does not come around often.
The wider version of this, across every platform with a search bar, is what we call search everywhere optimization.

Search Everywhere Optimization
The search bar is now everywhere. Most businesses are invisible on nearly all of it.
