Ads, AI Ads, and Everything In Between
No jargon. Just what the options actually are and which ones deserve your money.
"Just run some ads" sounds easy right up until you open the dashboard, see a dozen options, and quietly close the laptop.
So here is the whole thing in plain English. What the types are, where AI fits, and the three things that actually decide whether any of it works.
The types, quickly
Search ads. The ones at the top of Google when somebody types exactly what they need. Emergency dentist near me. Roofer San Diego. This person is already looking and already ready. You are just making sure they find you first. Highest intent there is.
Social ads. These land in someone's Instagram or Facebook feed while they scroll. Nobody went looking for you. You are interrupting a person on their couch, which means the creative is carrying almost the entire weight.
Display ads. The banners that follow you around the internet after you visit a site. Good for staying front of mind. Not great at making anyone decide anything today. Treat them like a reminder, not a pitch.
Video ads. Any of the above, built around video instead of a still. People remember video far better than text or photos. If you are only going to invest in one kind of creative, this is the one. It is not close.
Drop a client video in here
A good spot for a quick before and after of a client's video ad, or a short walkthrough of what makes an ad stop the scroll. Send the clip and we will place it.
Local and map ads. Tied to your Google Business Profile, shown to somebody nearby who is searching with intent to call or walk in. Enormous for anyone who depends on foot traffic or service calls, and consistently the most underused option I see.
Now, AI
AI shows up in ads two very different ways and the gap between them is where people get hurt.
AI as a helper. Suggesting copy variations, testing which headline wins, shifting budget toward what is working. A person still approves what goes live. This is how we use it and it is great.
AI as the whole operation. Upload once, let the algorithm handle everything, including generating or editing your actual creative with nobody reviewing it. Fast, cheap, usually fine.
Usually is doing an enormous amount of work in that sentence. We watched this go sideways for a nonprofit client in a way that cost real money and real trust. I wrote the whole thing up here, and it is worth ten minutes.
Short version: let AI do the math. Do not let it decide what your brand looks and sounds like in public.

A short clip following ad click to landing page to booked call works well in this spot.
The three things that actually matter
Who you target matters more than which platform you picked. A brilliant ad shown to the wrong person is just an expensive way to be ignored.
The creative usually decides the whole thing. Targeting gets you in front of people. Creative is what makes them stop. Most people spend all their energy on the first one.
What happens after the click. An ad pointing at a slow site or a confusing offer throws away everything you just paid to earn. This is the most common leak I find, by a mile. Worth running the search-yourself test before you spend another dollar.
So what should you run
There is no single best ad type and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling their favorite one. The right mix depends on your business, your budget, and what you actually want somebody to do.
What matters is having a person who understands the difference making that call, and looking at the work before it spends a dollar of your money.
If you are already running ads and want a second opinion on where the money is going, that is exactly what a free analysis is for.
